Horse racing was once upon a time considered as a “Sport of Kings” and was indulged in by various noblemen and landlords over a period of time. A sport that required lots of time and space not to mention money, it is still considered the privilege of a few elite. However, there are many commoners who indulge in this sport to try their luck at winning at bets on the different horse races. Records show that the first kind of Race Course in Pune was located at the banks of the river Mutha which remained operational till the year 1870 and then shifted to its present location in the same year when the Western India Turf Club took over when Major General Burnett gave land to the Club for the purpose of starting a Turf Club. The Race Course is spread over an area of 118.5 acres and is equipped with the best amenities for hosting the racing season every year. The Club House located within provides accommodation for visitors and tourists for it boasts of 11 double and 10 single rooms, along with other recreational facilities such as Billiards, a card room and a ball room. The Club House is; however, open during the Poona Racing Season. This is one place that finds itself mentioned in old records dating back to 1820. This famous Race Course is located in the eastern part of Pune off the Pune-Satara Highway. The St. Patrick Church stands opposite this grand race course like a fairy-tale castle at one end of the grounds. And to add to the magic of the monsoons is the racing season which the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) Pune declares open during the rainy season. The large number of horses, riding clubs and the even larger number of punters is evidence of its growing popularity.
