Film and Television Institute of India

The Film and Television Institute of India or FTII as it is popularly known was set up in the year 1960 on the premises of the famous Prabhat studios in Pune. Today, the Institute boasts of great names in the field of media especially television and cinema. The Institute was set up by the Government of India when it acquired the property as well as the motion picture equipment in the year 1960.

The FTII is an autonomous institution set up under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The studios of the Prabhat era have been declared as heritage sites by the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Spread over a green expanse of 21 acres, the campus has a good mix of old and new buildings. Located on Law College Road, FTII is easily approached from different parts of Pune with ease.

The five main courses that are taught here include Screenplay, Direction, Motion Picture Photography, Sound Recording and Editing. The Institute offers Post Graduate Diplomas in the various aspects of film making besides some short term courses as well. Separate courses are conducted in television medium as well. The Television wing of this Institute was the one that was located at Mandi House in New Delhi and was later shifted here. This wing was mainly concerned with conducting in-service training to personnel from Doordarshan.

Many prominent luminaries from the television, theatre and movie world are the products of FTII. Important names include Jaya Bachchan, Subhash Ghai and others who have won prestigious awards in film festivals in India and abroad. These personalities are known to visit the campus often for guest lectures as well as to catch up with the latest on the campus front. The canteen in the campus has played host to many such get-togethers.

Top-of-the line equipment, top-class faculty, a great number of prominent personalities who are ex-students of this Institute and the best film archives in the world, the FTII is the just the place to study about film-making in the country that produces the most number of films for both television and cinema.

However, the intake for the various courses is limited to 40 students who have to get through a qualifying entrance exam and compete with over a thousand applicants every year. It is definitely not the kind of course one can walk into in case he fails to get admission anywhere else.

Although the FTII is not easily accessible to the outsiders, prior permission specifying the reason for the visit needs to be taken in case one wants to see the insides of this Institute.
