Chakan is part of a big industrial area near Pune and is well known for its oil and other industries. It can be described as a historical place with industrial importance. One among many prominent forts in Maharashtra, the Chakan fort is unique. This is because it is the only one built on the ground unlike others built on hills and high mountains. In fact, historical records show that this fort was built with the view that it would turn out to be a rare kind of fort in Maharashtra. The Chakan fort also holds historical significance because it witnessed the last of the Maratha-British wars. Today, the Chakan fort is in pretty bad shape with most of its ramparts in a dilapidated condition and could certainly do with good maintenance. There is a temple dedicated to the Varah Avatar (Incarnation as wild boar or pig) of Lord Vishnu where carvings on the temple walls depict the entire story of the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Shri Chakreshwar temple within the fort precincts. Carvings of such type are rarely seen in any other ancient temple in India. This fort is worth a visit if you are interested in ancient carvings and old forts. The fort’s location on ground level however, puts it out of many a trekker’s itinerary.
