Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy originally planned and built Bund Garden with the pious intention of providing for water supply to the poor people during the summer. Bund Garden is now known as Mahatma Gandhi Udyan. This garden structured in the form of a mini-dam lies on the right bank of the Mula-Mutha River and is now used more for recreational purposes than being a source of water supply. Bund Garden is in the eastern part of Pune and lies about 2 kms away from Pune railway station towards the northeast and is a five-minute drive by any vehicle. It is situated on Airport Road and is quite close to the Camp area. Besides, the bridge nearby crosses the river to the Gandhi National Memorial. The river’s backwaters are used for boat rides and watching the migratory birds that come visiting during the winter months is a treat by itself. Many locals as well as tourists come to the garden to unwind with a stroll in the evening or enjoy a cool boat ride. Children come here for the boat rides as also the horse rides. Besides the eatables like Bhel Puri and Paani Puri attract many here for a quick evening snack. Though this place may get crowded at times in the evening, it nevertheless is popular among regular joggers, citizens out for a weekly getaway or the tourist on his trip to Pune. A few years back, in an attempt to increase the popularity of Bund Garden, the authorities added a well-designed jogging track that has been bringing in the youth as well. Bund Garden is also a favourite spot with many people from different walks of life as it is close to places like the Osho Ashram, the Camp area and N. Wadia College.
