The Empress Botanical Garden is also popularly known as Soldier’s Garden. The Empress Garden was originally the personal property of Sardar Vithalrao Purandhare and was managed by General Finjer. The British Government took over this property in the year 1838 and in the year 1845, it came under the control of Sir Charles Napier upon which it was christened as the “Garden of Dr. Don”. The name changed to “Empress Garden” when Queen Victoria was proclaimed as “Empress of India”. However the garden still retained the name “Soldier’s Garden” as many British soldiers, who came here for recreation purposes, frequented the place. Not much is known about the history of the place between the years 1845 and 1892, when the then Bombay Government came to possess it and handed over the maintenance of the Garden to the Agri-Horticultural society of Western India, which by itself was one of the oldest in India. The Empress Garden is spread over approximately fifty-nine acres of land and is very popular for its mangoes, tamarind and cut flowers. There are fine tropical trees here that provide the much needed respite to the visitors here. A small zoo is also located within the precincts. A soothing sight for sore eyes, the Empress Garden is a perfect place for picnics and outings. The Empress Botanical Garden is located next to Pune-Solapur Road. Located in the heart of the Pune Cantonment, the garden is very close to Pune Race course and St. Patrick’s church.
