Pune is surrounded on all sides by places worth visiting. These include forts, hills, temples and ancient and modern architectural wonders. Baneshwar, located approximately 35 kms to the south of Pune is one such spot that combines spirituality with entertainment. Baneshwar is known for a very beautiful and old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to historians, the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I built this temple. The temple is situated in the dark woods, which justifies its name (Ban – jungle). An excellent example of how simple can be beautiful, the temple with its idols of Lord Shiva, Devi Laxmi and Lord Vishnu speaks volumes about the artistic creativity used in making them. There are five Shivalings here in a trench, besides which, one is sure to get enthralled by the beauty of the main entrance, the light stand, the dharamshalas, the clean water tanks and the big bell, in and around the temple. Just behind the temple, one can see a garden and a small stream with a waterfall that adds to the beauty of the charming place. This area has also been developed as a picnic spot and the peak season is witness to crowds of people with family and friends who come to enjoy a complete day here.
