For the local people in Pune, an outing by the lake or a picnic with a boat ride almost always means they are going to Khadakvasla. Khadakvasla, Panshet and Varasgaon form a group of three major dams near Pune that not just provide water to the entire city of Pune but also serve as picnic spots for the locals. The Khadakvasla dam constructed on the Mutha river, was built during the British rule in India. It is located about 20 kms away from the main city area of Pune. Records also show that the year 1961 saw the dam blown to save the city of Pune as the Panshet dam had overflowed and caused havoc and destruction by flooding the city with its waters. Khadakvasla dam offers a good view of Sinhgad and Peacock Bay. The important defence institution National Defence Academy or NDA as it is popularly known is also located here. Other places of scenic beauty around this area include the Khudje village and Neelkanteshwar, which is located near the Bahuli village, past Khudje. One often refers to Khadakvasla as Pune’s chowpatty and Sunday and other holidays see a big crowd here. The monsoon is another special time to come to the Khadakvasla dam where hundreds of people come to the place just to see the overflowing dam. Panshet dam is more famous for the Water Sports facilities that have come up there in recent times. Another popular picnic spot, the way to Panshet is surrounded with lush dark woods and the Speed Boats and Water Scooters give the visitors a great source of fun and entertainment.
