Pune Places of Historic Interest Shinde`s Chhatri |
Shinde’s Chhatri |
|
Shinde’s Chhatri or Shindyanchi Chhatri as it is locally known is a tribute to Shrimant Mahadji Shinde. Shrimant Mahadji Shinde was a great warrior in the Maratha army. He was the Commander-in-chief for the mighty Peshwas for a good twenty years between 1760 and 1780. Located in Wanowrie in Pune’s eastern area within a few kilometers of the Pune racecourse and about 4-5 kms from Pune Camp and 7-8 kms from the Deccan area, the memorial to this great Maratha warrior is worth visiting for its sheer brilliance of architecture. Shrimant Shinde built the Shiva temple in the campus in the year 1794 but unfortunately passed away in the same year. His last rites were performed at this temple. Almost 200 years later, a Samadhi in memory of this warrior, was built in the year 1965 by Madhavrao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior. Till date, the Scindia Devasthan Trust of Gwalior maintains this temple. Built using Rajasthani styles of architecture, the imposing edifice is virtually unaffected by the years that have gone by. The memorial design is easily among the best architectural delights of Pune. The beauty of the memorial adds to the serene atmosphere of the place. As you enter Shindyanchi Chhatri, the first thing you notice is a sign that asks you not to open an umbrella in front of the memorial or in the vicinity as that would be an insult to the great warrior’s memory. The memorial houses Shrimant Mahadji’s Chhatri (umbrella) and his silver portrait. This silver likeness of the great warrior is adorned with a flame coloured turban and an exquisite shawl. At the feet of the portrait are the original pooja vessels (vessels used by the commander-in-chief for his daily worship of the family deity). The memorial is open to the public from 9 am to 9 pm everyday and the entry fee is a nominal Rs.2 per person. This structure is well worth visiting while on a trip to Pune and should not be missed. Not if you are going up to the racecourse and can’t spare another half an hour. The address for this memorial is Survey no.75, Shinde Chhatri, Wanowrie, Pune – 40. An auto should make your travel easier.
