Page 1 of 2 Pune is known to have been the seat of Maratha power and the different areas in Pune bear witness to the rich culture and grandeur of the times when great rulers and generals strode its paths. Pune has some of the best glimpses of history of the erstwhile Maratha Empire and some of these prominent structures and monuments are located in places that one may cross many times, sometimes even during the course of a single day. Among some of the best existing structures in Pune is Vishrambaug Wada which lies prominently in the heart of the city on Bajirao Road. It is a 300 years old three-storeyed mansion that once was part of Pune’s heritage. The beautiful entrance and the amazing woodwork on the balconies are praiseworthy. The last Peshwa, Bajirao II built this mansion for his residence in Pune or Poona of old. The beautiful carvings on pure Saag wood and the artistic columns bear testimony to the skill of the artisans of those times. Rarely do we find such pieces of history intact over the centuries. It is believed by historians that the Peshwa must have spent a few lakh rupees on its construction at that point of time. A fire destroyed parts of the Wada in the year 1880. It was however restored because of public contributions. The Pune Municipal Corporation has recently renovated Vishrambaug Wada again in the year 2006. After the Peshwas, the building was used first as a jail during the British era and then as a post office for the Poona Corporation. When the post office was shifted from here, it was used to accommodate assorted offices of the Corporation. However, after its renovation, it is now being restored to its original glory and one is able to take a peek at the setting of the Peshwa household. The famous historian Babasaheb Purandare is responsible for this transformation. A small museum has also been set up here. The entry fee is a nominal Rs.5/- per person This place is in close proximity to the city area and is in the immediate vicinity of Laxmi Road, one of Pune’s big shopping areas. Definitely worth visiting, it also is located just a little away from Shaniwar Wada and Lal Mahal, two more places of historical importance in Pune’s glittering heritage.
