While on a visit to Pune, people make it a point to visit the Chaturshringi temple to seek the blessings of Devi Ambreshwari, the reigning deity of the city of Pune. The famous Chaturshringi temple is located on Senapati Bapat Road, about 2 kms away from Pune University campus. Chaturshringi means a mountain with four peaks. The temple consists of smaller temples also dedicated to Goddess Durga in her various forms. Lord Ganesh also has his place of importance in the temple precincts that are spread over the four small hillocks that give the temple its name. Situated on a small hillock is the temple dedicated to Goddess Durga and the presiding deity here is Goddess Ambreshwari. This temple is said to have been built during the times of Shivaji Maharaj. Legend has it that the Goddess Durga implored a merchant in Pune to build a temple for her. It is said that this merchant used to visit the temples of the Goddess during his visits to other places. When he became old and could no longer travel widely, he felt deeply hurt that he could now no longer get a glimpse of the Goddess Durga. This was when the Goddess came to him in a dream and being pleased with the merchant’s devotion blessed him with her presence on this hillock. Deeply moved by gratitude, the merchant lost no time in constructing the temple. The beautiful temple has a scale model of the entire temple and its surrounding landscape displayed at the entrance to the temple. Nestled amidst modern buildings that house huge IT and software related companies; the temple still holds its grandeur in the modern times. An annual fair is held during the nine days of Navratri and the place is lit up with lights and huge giant-wheels. It has almost become a ritual for many to visit this temple during this festival. The entire place wears a festive look and one can find hawkers selling everything from balloons, sweets, cups & saucers, paper swords, bows and arrows, lots of foodstuff, stuff for home decorations, bangles, bindis and a 100 other odd things too. Anything that one can think of can be bought at this fair. The fair is on the whole night through and people come from far off places to visit the temple and have fun too. The giant-wheels are enjoyed enormously by both children and adults. Other play things such as a jumping train, a play pen make people really enjoy their night out in Pune. ![]() Last Updated: Saturday, 07 April 2007 Quote this article on your site | Views: 882 | E-mail
