Pune is as cosmopolitan in nature as any other metro city in India and is known to have welcomed people from all religions and races since a very ancient time. The many places of worship in the city that mark its diversity also include the Lal Dewal or the famous Jewish Synagogue here. Moreover, this temple of worship is also a gift from one of Pune’s famous benefactors and philanthropists. Located in eastern Pune on Moledina road, in the Camp area, to the northwest of the Sassoon Hospital, is the Ohel David Synagogue or Lal Dewal, as it is more popularly known in Pune. Built in the year 1867 by the famous philanthropist Sir David Sassoon, this Jewish Shrine or Synagogue is known more by its epitaph of Lal Dewal or Red Temple as it is a big red building made up of red brick and stone with colored windows and almost resembles a church. There is a 90-ft tower to the north of the entrance. This tower also bears a clock that was especially brought to Pune from London. The entire structure is built in ancient English Gothic style. Sir David Sassoon’s tomb is also located here in the center of the cemetery in this Synagogue. Besides being a place of worship for Jews, this grand building is a must see for anyone who is planning a trip to Pune. No one would miss this conspicuous building while visiting the Camp area in Pune and a visit to the Shrine before shopping in the Camp area is definitely recommended.
