Pune, the city of peths saw the rise and fall of the erstwhile Maratha Empire and at the same time witnessed the growth of urban culture in a gradual manner. The peths or localities were established at different points of time and served specific business or social needs. Some of them have been established as far back as the 17th century. Some of them were established during the Mughal rule and some during the time of the Peshwas. Seven of the peths have been named after the days of the week. They are Raviwar Peth, Somwar Peth, Mangalwar Peth, Budhwar Peth, Guruwar Peth, Shukrawar Peth and Shaniwar Peth. The other peths include Kasba Peth, Sadashiv Peth, Narayan Peth, Bhavani Peth, Ganj Peth, Nana Peth, Rasta Peth, Ghorpade Peth, Ganesh Peth, Vetal Peth and Navi Peth. Kasba Peth is the first peth to be founded in Pune followed by the other peths. The Kasba Ganpati is the Gram Daivat or the Presiding Deity of the city. Each of the peth areas were founded in such a manner that they suited some business purpose too. While Sadashiv Peth is known for its many educational and cultural institutions, Narayan Peth has its stationery, paper and printing market. Even today, most of these areas are known for their commercial institutions and business areas while only a couple of them continue to serve as residential areas. Some of the old wadas for which Pune is famous can be found in these Peth areas. Although most of these old structures have paved the way for newer constructions, one can still find an odd building tucked away in some corner that still retains its architectural charm from the days gone by.
