Page 2 of 2 Malshej Ghat (ghat = valley) is a beautiful tourist spot snuggled in the rough hills of the Western Ghats in Maharashtra. A heaven for trekkers and picnic goers alike, Malshej is nature’s beautiful gift in the monsoons. The months of August and September bring out the best in the Sahyadris creating a scenic picture with fog, heavy and dark clouds and amazing waterfalls cascading down the hills. The unending hills provide trekkers with an experience they will never forget. Located about 150 kms from the city of Mumbai, bordering Pune, Thane and Ahmednagar districts, one can travel here by road. If one travels by rail, the nearest rail station would be Kalyan or Karjat on the Central Railway route. State transport buses are also available at various cities like Pune and Mumbai. M.T.D.C. has its rest house here. Deep woods filled with flora and fauna attract many a tourist here. Animals like tigers, leopards, rabbits and peacocks are not uncommon. Besides these, Flamingos, the migratory birds from places like Siberia that come here every year between July and September are added attractions. They are clearly visible at Khireshwar, located about 2-3 kms from the Ghat area. As one moves on towards Khireshwar village and further on, one can go to Harishchandragadh and also view other forts in the area. The awesome climate, the cool and soothing shade of green over the hills and the cold cascading waterfalls make for a picture perfect bounty of nature every time one visits this place. No wonder then that this place is also known as the Kulu - Manali of Maharashtra.
