They blame it on the mushrooming of uncertified doctors.Seven people have lost their lives in the past eight months in Vasai after being treated by doctors without medical degrees. Vasai block development officer GB Pimple has drawn up a list of 78 quacks practising in the area

"Sometimes the nurse is here, sometime she's not," said Nagji Lal Pandore, a skinny old man in a saffron turban. "Sometimes she has medicines, sometimes she doesn't. Why take a chance?"

So, like many people here, his family has turned to amateur private "doctors" who have regular hours and plentiful medications to sell.

His daughter-in-law Shanti Bai, 30, went to such a doctor for a fever six months ago. He gave her an injection. The next day, she was dead and her children motherless.

Villagers blamed the doctor and he fled, but the heartache remains. Mr. Pandore and his wife have broken the news to their 5-year-old grandson, but they are still telling their 3-year-old granddaughter that her mother is away on a trip. "She cries and cries and asks, `Where is my mother?' " he said.

Judicial magistrate first class S.S. Budruck on Friday sentenced sales tax department peon Asha Jawa to two years rigorous imprisonment for forging her payslip to obtain a bank loan.

The court, however, acquitted the department?s clerk Jyoti Khinolkar and stenographer Fakira Parmar due to lack of evidence.

The prosecution alleged that Jawa, in connivance with the other suspects, had forged a payslip in order to obtain a loan from the Janseva co-operative bank, Ramwadi branch, in August 2001.

Jawa allegedly forged the signature and used the seal of the department?s deputy commissioner on the bogus payslip and handed it over to the bank as a genuine document.

The bank sent the document to the department for verification, after which the fraud came to light. The department?s assistant sales tax officer Sanju Ramchandra Pawar subsequently lodged a complaint against the trio at the Yerawada police station. The assistant public prosecutor examined eight witnesses, including the deputy commissioner, Hirawati Mulgaonkar, a handwriting expert and other staff of the department. The court held Jawa guilty, but acquitted the two other women of all charges.

A trio kept their neighbours awake all night with marathon sex sessions so loud that one of them ended up in court.
The bedroom behaviour of Kerry Norris, an unemployed mother-of-one, disrupted her neighbours' lives for two and a half years, magistrates heard.
Norris, 29, was yesterday fined after having all-night sessions with boyfriend Adam Hinton at their one-bedroom flat in Brighton, East Sussex.

The pair yelled out obscenities and their headboard bagged against the wall until 6am, Brighton magistrates heard.
Len Baten, prosecuting for Brighton and Hove council, told the court how the sex sessions kept neighbours in the block of six flats awake all night - sometimes leaving them so exhausted they could not go to work in the morning.
Mother-of-three Michelle Tyrrell told the court the nightly sessions were so loud they kept her four-year-old daughter awake - and led to her to ask the meaning of obscene phrases she had been forced to overhear.
A visibly upset Michelle said: 'My daughter now wets the bed and has nightmares all the time because of what she heard.'
She added: 'Miss Norris sunbathed naked out of the back of the flat in full view of workmen.'
HGV driver Richard Powell, 36, said he has sleepless nights because his bed backs onto Norris's wall.
'The headboard bangs on the wall as they are having sex and it keeps me awake all night,' he said.
'I have had to take days off work because of lack of sleep as I have to get up at 5.30am.'
His wife Sarah said she had to move her children into the front room of her one-bedroom flat because of the racket from Norris's bedroom.
Mrs Powell said: 'I don't like having my children listening to what is going on through the wall. It is disgusting the way the pair of them are carrying on.'
Norris was found guilty of two charges of breaking a noise abatement order imposed by the council in June 2007. Two other charges were thrown out
Unemployed Norris, who was fined ?200 pounds with ?100 costs and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of ?15 pounds, denied having a boyfriend at the time she was accused of breaking the order on February 25.

She told the hearing: 'At the time when I was meant to have broken the noise abatement order I didn't have a boyfriend so it wasn't me having sex.'

But she said she had moved her bed in response to neighbours' complaints even though a council officer had reassured her that it was alright to have the bed against the wall.

Norris added: 'In my flat you hear noises coming from everywhere and you don't know which flat it comes from.

After she enjoyed a healthy sex life, Norris replied: 'Yes, I have a normal sex life.'

Kerry also denied claims from neighbour Sarah Powell that in February this year she apologised to her for making too much noise during sex.

Boyfriend Adam Hinton told the court that Norris called out during sex - but denied she had used the obscene phrase quoted by Mrs Tyrell.

'Kerry is no noisier than any other partner I have been with,' he insisted.

Tony Waller, defending, said noise coming from the flat was the same as you would get in any normal block and said Miss Norris was getting the blame for other noisy tenants.

Chairman of the bench Roger Stamp said: 'We have seen you have created a noise nuisance in your flat. We have not accepted your evidence or your partner's evidence but the only cause we have in this case is to issue a fine.'

Two city Constables, who undertook a literal ‘moral policing’ as a lucrative option, are now cooling their heels in a lock-up here.

The duo - Ramdas Gadre and Anand Ayachit - according to police, chased two motor-cycle borne college youths in the small hours of Wednesday in a rickshaw and stopped them when they were passing through Budhwar Peth area, a red light zone.

A complaint lodged with police by the youths said the two Constables took them to task for “visiting prostitutes” and demanded money to avoid “action” against them.

Since the youths did not have much money with them, the Constables took them to an ATM near Alka cinema house and made them withdraw an amount of Rs 3,000. The scared youths were then let off.

Recovering from the midnight shock, the youths filed a complaint at Pharaskhana police station in the morning alleging extortion by the Constables.

They were shown photographs of all police staff under the jurisdiction and asked to identify the duo. After the complainants recognised Gadre and Ayachit, police arrested them last night under the offence of extortion.

The police authorities conceded that similar complaints were being received from red light areas of the city and asked people to be vigilant and come forward to report without fear.
